• UW and Veterans Affairs clinical trial aims to prevent type 2 diabetes through medication  A clinical trial at the Veterans Affairs Puget Sound Health Care System and the UW will address new approaches to prevent development of type 2 diabetes or slow its progression. Participants will be treated with medications normally used for people who have had diabetes for at least one year.

• Depression raises diabetics’ risk of severe low blood sugar episodes  Patients with diabetes who are depressed are much more likely to develop episodes of dangerously low blood sugars, or hypoglycemia, than are those who are not depressed, a new study by researchers at the University of Washington and the Group Health Research Institute has found.

Based on these results, Merck will discontinue the preladenant program.
