Alberta offers fine opportunities for various levels of education.
The province has several universities and colleges, including the University of Alberta in Edmonton, which had external research funding of over $400 million from 2005-06. The University of Alberta hosts over 36,000 students and offers more than 200 undergraduate and 170 graduate programs. The University of Calgary (U of C), in Calgary, hosts over 28,000 students. The U of C offers over 80 academic programs as well as 36 research centres and institutions, and is one of Canada’s top research universities. The University of Lethbridge, in Lethbridge, hosts over 8,000 students with over 150 academic programs.
Athabasca University (AU) is Canada’s foremost distance-education and online university based in Edmonton. AU serves approximately 32,000 students annually.
Other noteworthy colleges reside in the Princess Province. Olds College, in Olds, offers an agricultural emphasis and contains the Olds College School of Innovation (OCSI), a state of the art applied research facility. A new campus of Olds College is now open in Calgary. The Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in Edmonton and the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in Calgary are two technical colleges for skills training.
Many schools exist for children to attend in Alberta. Parents and students have the choices of free public schools, home schooling, private schools, religious schools, charter schools, and Francophone schools.
