Alberta BioEvolution Poster Released
June 24, 2008, SEATTLE, WASHINGTON – "Alberta BioEvolution," a genealogy poster that that illustrates the
"technology origins" of the more than 40 biotechnology, and medical device firms that comprise the life science
industry in the province of Alberta, was unveiled today by Info.Resource, Inc., owner and publisher
of www.AlbertaLifeScience.com.
"Alberta is a rapidly growing life science centre in Canada and I believe that industry, academia and government
need to understand the technology origins that led to this national position in order to build upon that foundation
to support further growth and economic development,” said Phil Ness, President & CEO of Info.Resource.
The Alberta BioEvolution poster is based on phone interviews with company and non-profit organization representatives,
and depicts the origins of a company's "founding" technology and technology licensing relationships with the
province's universities and non-profit research organizations -- the economic engines supporting innovative research and
development. Other survey findings include:
- The life science industry in Alberta is comprised of more than forty companies, with thirty-five percent publicly
traded on the NASDAQ, New York or Toronto Stock Exchanges, or an Over the Counter securities market;
- Nearly one-half of the life science companies in Alberta have been established since 2000;
- More than sixty percent of Alberta’s life science industry is engaged in the R&D, and manufacture of biotechnology
products and/or services; twenty percent are pharmaceutical based; ten percent are developing and/or manufacturing
medical devices; and the remaining are non-profit research institutions conducting research in human
therapeutics and diagnostics, and agricultural products.
- Notably, more than forty percent of the industry is founded on technology developed at the University of
lberta (UA) and University of Calgary (UC).
The Alberta BioEvolution poster is sponsored by Amgen, BioLife Solutions, Economic Development For Central Oregon,
Ikaria, Lease Crutcher Lewis, Merck & Co., Ratner BioMedical, SAB Architects, Technical Safety Services, among others.
