January is Thyroid Awareness Month
The American Thyroid Association® (ATA) is the leading organization devoted to thyroid biology
and to the prevention and treatment of thyroid disease through excellence in research,
clinical care, education, and public health.
More than 12 percent of the U.S. population will develop a thyroid condition during
their lifetime. An estimated 20 million Americans have some form of thyroid disease, and
up to 60 percent of those with thyroid disease are unaware of their condition.

LifeScience Moment: The FDA approved a drug to treat the genetic mechanism of cystic fibrosis
On Jan. 31, 2012, Vertex announced the FDA had approved KALYDECOTM (ivacaftor), the
first medicine to treat the underlying cause of cystic fibrosis (CF), a rare, genetic disease.
KALYDECO (kuh-LYE-deh-koh) is approved for people with CF ages 6 and older who have at least one copy
of the G551D mutation in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene.
Approximately 1,200 people in the U.S., or 4 percent of those with CF, are
believed to have this mutation.
