Research Associate I/II, Protein Engineering

Description

About the Position

This position will report to the Principal Scientist in Protein Engineering and will be based in Vancouver, BC. As a member of the Protein Engineering group, you will contribute to the development of platforms and solutions to support novel therapeutics. You will be required to interact across functional groups and be capable of working in a highly dynamic and fast-paced.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepares expression constructs, performs purification and QC of antibodies and other biologics.
  • Performs routine in vitro affinity and activity characterization of antibodies and other biologics.
  • May suggest improvements to existing methods and develop new technologies for project advancement.
  • Analyzes and interprets scientific data, documents experiments in lab notebooks (physical and electronic forms), and multi-tasks with focus on detail in a fast-paced environment.
  • Prepares written reports and analysis of experiments for internal and external use, makes presentations to team.
  • Maintains a clean, organized and operational lab.
  • Fosters effective and collaborative relationships with fellow employees across all research groups, including planning and coordinating experiments and sample hand-offs.
  • May participate in the preparation of patents and publications.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum of bachelor’s degree in a relevant scientific discipline and minimum of 1 year of academic or industrial practical experience.
  • Experience with protein expression methods (E. coli, insect or mammalian cells) and protein purification techniques, including IMAC, protein A/L, HIC, IEX, SEC.
  • Familiarity with standard protein analytical techniques (SDS-PAGE, Western Blotting, UV/Vis spectrometry, protein concentration, buffer exchange, formulation, etc).
  • Familiarity with standard molecular biology techniques (PCR, cloning, plasmid prep, transfection).
  • Demonstrated scientific analysis and problem-solving skills
  • Proven interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively as a member of cross-functional team. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Good organizational skills and the ability to work effectively in a high paced, fast changing environment. Results-oriented.
  • Experience in the following areas will be considered additional assets:
    • Mammalian tissue culture and cell-based assays (viability, cytotoxicity, agonism/antagonism, etc).
    • Binding affinity determination by ELISA, SPR, BLI, Kinexa, FACS.
    • Other biophysical characterization techniques such as HPLC-SEC, DSC, ITC, DSF, analytical ultracentrifugation, cIEF.
    • High-throughput screening methods and instrumentation.
    • Protein chemistry/structure knowledge.An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
